Afton to Guilford, Returning Via Bainbridge

36 Miles - Terrain 2-1

Meeting Place - Municipal Parking Lot Afton

From Binghamton, I81 North to I88 to Exit #7, Afton. Left at top of ramp, crossing bridges over I88 and Susquehanna River. Will be on NY41 as enter town. At Junction NY7 (Mobil station is across the street) turn left, then immediately turn left (a 180 degree manuever) following sign to municipal parking.

To Destination

  • From parking, Straight across NY7 onto NY41 north
  • Right at Y onto CR17 (NY41 goes left)
  • Continue along CR17 about 10 miles
Caution - Must stop for NY206 at bottom of a steep downgrade even though it looks like you can just start up next grade
Caution - CR17 makes a sharp Left at bottom of another steep downgrade - do not proceed straight. Here the sign shows "slow to 20mph for left curve"
  • From CR17 Right at T onto CR27
  • Right at T onto CR35 (same as NY220? - sign indicates Oxford is to the left)
Check out lake on left prior to Guilford. Best access is at the east (far) end by the site of the dam. Good spot to relax.
  • Continue on CR35 into Guilford
  • There is a convenience store shortly before turning to leave town. Good spot to "restock" on water, snacks.

Return to Start

  • Right just after business district of Guilford unto CR38
  • CR38 Immediately begins a big upgrade
  • Right at T onto NY7 into Brainbridge
  • Left at only Light in Brainbridge toward I88 entrance.
  • Just after crossing first bridge, Right onto CR39
  • Right at Jct NY41 onto NY41, cross bridge
  • Two consecutive Lefts at Jct NY7 onto road to municipal parking and start

Places to Eat -

In Guilford - just a convenience store with prepackaged sandwiches, etc.

In Bainbridge - several places.

Or left at junction of CR38 and NY7 to Susquehanna Restaurant on the right after passing General Clinton park. Adds about 1.5 miles to ride. Good food and an interesting place.

Notes -

After leaving NY41 the next 20 miles or so are continuous good size hills. Nothing extreemly long or steep, but not a flat spot anywhere. If you're not descending you're climbing. Some rate this part of the ride as a "one" for terrain, but there are no real monster climbs.

Alternate return from Guilford is to continue on NY35, then right on NY8 to right on NY7 (near Sidney) then on into Bainbridge. (Or cross river to CR39 and go all the way to Afton if not stopping to eat.)
